Questions ABOUT RAFTING

  • Lots of laughter and a great time. We will give you every thing you need to go rafting. Our driver can pick you up from your hotel and drop you off, after your 3.5 hour adventure with us. After you check in at our main office we will get you outfitted for your awesome rafting trip in Denali. Your Trip Leader will give you some instructions and how to get outfitted. New Wave will provide you with river shoes, a dry suit, a life jacket and helmet. After you are suited and ready to go rafting you will board the fun bus, which takes you to the starting point of your river trip. You will raft for roughly 1.5 to 2 hours depending on water levels. Your bus driver will meet you at the ending point where he then will drive you back to the main office. You will take off the drysuit and put your dry personal shoes back on. Check out your photos of your raft trip. You then are ready to head back to your hotel or on to another excursion.

  • Your clothes are what will keep you warm. The the river is 36 F. so wear warm layers even in the summer. We recommend a long sleeve shirt and comfortable pants and two pairs of socks. Your socks should not get wet but they will be in the bottom of the boat sitting in cold water.(So wear two pairs of socks on your raft trip). A thin jacket on cold days and for you Florida folks. The suit is made to go over your clothes. We can accommodate bulky clothes. Its easier to cool you off then it is to warm you up on a glacial river. Your hands and head should be the only body part that gets wet. The suit has gaskets at the wrist and neck with latex socks that keep the water out. We sell rubber gloves at the office but feel free to bring some warm knit clothes and a pair of dishwashing gloves. (yep! the yellow ones.) They will keep your warm knit gloves dry. No need for gloves on nice days but it has snowed in July and been 80 degrees the next day.

  • Hiking Boots

Don’t buy the classic, hard leather boots—too heavy for most day hikers, and hard to break in.

Your best bet: lightweight boots with ankle support.

Trail running shoes are fine if you’re used to them on uneven terrain.

Alaska trails often feature wet or muddy stretches. Consider trail shoes with waterproof, breathable liners such as Gore-tex, or carry waterproof, breathable socks.

    Dress in Layers

Inside layer: Moisture-wicking fabrics against the skin, such as Capilene (also called polypropylene) or light wool.

Sunny days. Drip-dry style long sleeve shirt and zip-off pants. They dry fast if you get sweaty, offer sun protection and can work as an outer layer over your poly-pro in light-but-chilly wind.

Insulating layer: Expedition weight long underwear or light pile. For most summer hikes, you’ll only need a top. Great to put on at the summit or during lunch break.

Outside layer: breathable yet waterproof fabric such as Gore-tex

Rain forest? If hiking in areas like Prince William Sound or Southeast Alaska—with potential for unrelenting torrential downpours—consider carrying coated, waterproof rain gear as a back up.

  • First and foremost Alaska is vast and wild, we wouldn’t want you to get lost out there. If you want to make the most of your adventures having a great a guide is key. Our guides are experts of the area and speacifically trainined in outdoor adventure. New Wave guides will ensure you get the most of your time in Denali.
